Yanjiao Temple

Tucked away in the pine forest on the hillside behind Sanqing Palace is Yanjiao Temple. The small granite-structured temple is suspended in the middle and inclined at both sides on its roof. Inside the temple rest 18 stone statues of the Immortal. In the entrance plate of the temple is carved “Yanjiao Temple”. The two columns at both sides are inscribed an ancient couplet. Taoism holds that “Method is indispensable to Taoism” and “Method is the vehicle of Taoism”. Execution according to method and development of Taoism theory is an important religious activity. Therefore, Fulu School gave high premium on religious buildings such as Method Hall, and Method Improvement Temple. By mimicking Longhushan’s placement of Yanjiao Temple, Sanqingshan also has its own equivalent well arranged. The edge of the upper layer is in the shape of fish and dragon while on the second layer is in the shape of a rooster. The base plate is a 90cm –high rectangular. It is in accordance with the tradition of Taoism. Also it is an important and legendary building among the Taoism temple buildings.
        It is said that the rooster at the temple roof edge has something to do with a legend occurred during construction of Sanqing Palace. The folklore goes that before development of Sanqingshan by Wang Hu, he was basking unhusked rice before the village. But the some rice was eaten by a rooster stealthily, then he chased it with a stick until he came before Sanqing Palace where he stopped. After gave the rooster several hits, the rooster missed. Then Wang Hu dug the earth and found a golden rooster which had a rooster body but human head. Then Wang Hu built Sanqing Palace here to worship the Immortals of Sanqingshan and the God of Rooster. Later, it is said that Wang Hu heard the rooster crowing at his opposite. Then he ordered his disciples to move Sanqinggong southward for 100m where the rooster crowed. This is where Sanqing Palace stands today.
