Geopark is dominated by its sense of Geological Sciences, exotic beauty and unique geological landscape, the fusion of natural landscape and cultural landscape of the natural park. By the UNESCO, the plan began in 2000 after the implementation of the goal is to select more than five hundred worth preserving geological landscape to strengthen protection. To 2015, China has 33 geoparks into the UNESCO Global Geoparks network.
UNESCO proposed six definitions as below:
(1) a clear boundary, an area large enough so that it serve the local economic development by a series of special scientific significance, rarity and aesthetic value of geological sites, may also have archaeological, ecological, historical or cultural value.
(2) these sites are linked to each other and are subject to the formal management and protection of the park style, and the establishment of an official plan for the sustainable development of regional social and economic;
(3) the social and economic development of culture and environment sustainable development can improve the living conditions and environment of local residents, and enhance the identity of residents in residential areas and promote the local cultural renaissance;
(4) to explore and verify the protection methods for all kinds of geosites;
(5) can be used as an educational tool for sustainable development education, environmental education, training and research in all disciplines related to the ground;
(6) under the jurisdiction of the independent jurisdiction of the host country. The government of the host country must effectively manage the park in accordance with the laws and regulations of the country.
