Zhijindong Cave UNESCO Global Geopark of China


On October 25, 2015, Sanqingshan UNESCO Global Geopark and Zhijindong UNESCO Global Geopark became sister geoparks. The two parks would carry out cooperation in the conservation of geosites, scientific research, park management, popular science education, personnel exchanges and others in the future.

 Zhijindong UNESCO Global Geopark is located in the western Guizhou Plateau, in the territory of Zhijin County of Guizhou Province, with 26°38′31″~26°52′35″N, 105°44′42″~106°11′38″. The park covers an area of 170km2 and the elevation is 900~1670m. It won the qualification of "National Geopark" in 2004, and was officially opened in January 2006. On January 15, 2014, the Review Committee of National Geopark organized and held the “recommendation appraising meeting of the eighth batch of Global Geoparks". Through the review, Zhijindong UNESCO Global Geopark won the candidacy for China to apply for UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015.

 At 5 p.m. on September 19, 2015 (Japan time), in the 4th Asia Pacific Geopark Webinar held in the Sanin Coast Global Geopark of Japan, Zhijindong UNESCO Global Geopark was approved formally by the UNESCO to join the Global Geoparks Network and joined the big family of the Global Geoparks as a new member. At this point, Zhijin stepped on the world stage, adding another world-class brand to Guizhou which was famous as “the Park Province”, and it became the first Global Geopark in Guizhou.
