Villuercas Ibores Jara UNESCO Global Geopark of Spain



On the opening ceremony of the European Geoparks Week held on June 3, 2015, the Sanqingshan UNESCO Global Geopark from China and the Spain Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark of Spain officially concluded as sister parks. At the same time, Sanqingshan scenery video was also played at the meeting, and its beauty impressed the delegates present deeply.

Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark of Spain is located at the remote mountainous area in the southeast of Caceres Province in Spanish Extremadura area. This mountain was named after the highest peak, Villuercaseak (1601 m) and its magnificent landscape also contains the Guadalupe monastery. The morphological characteristics of the unique landform of the geopark are influenced by the structure, and it has the fold and fracture landscape produced under the strong effect. The geopark covers extensive geological time, where you can find the oldest rocks in Europe, including rocks in the Sinian Period, Cambrian Period, Ordovician Period and Silurian Period from 650 million years to 400 million years ago. Geopark also harbors a wealth of natural heritage, including the protected birds, biodiversity corridors and trees of memorial significance. In addition, there are mining cultural relics and decorative stone or rock that can be traced back to the bronze age and the iron age.
