Lesvos Island UNESCO Global Geopark of Greece

In September 2012, Sanqingshan sent representatives to Greek Lesvos Petrified Forest Global Geopark for survey and study, during which the two sides concluded a sister park relation.

Lesvos is one of the largest islands in Greece. Lesvos Petrified Forest Global Geopark is located in the Sigri, Antissa and Eresos regions, in the Northeast of Aegean Sea, and covers an area of 1630 square kilometers, shaped like a leaf. The island is fertile with a wide range of vegetation, including silver and white olive trees, dark green pine, gray green oak and unique wild flowers. In addition to petrified trunk, well-preserved petrified roots, fruits, leaves and seeds of trees can also be seen.

The petrified trees constituting the famous "Petrified Forest" are gathered in the Sigri, Antissa and Eresos area, covering an area of more than 150 thousand hectares. In addition to the petrified trunk, well-preserved petrified roots, fruits, leaves and seeds of trees can also be seen. A large number of well - developed upright petrified trees with complete roots provide evidence for the petrifaction of these trees in their original position. Therefore, this is a local petrified forest. Lesvos Petrified Forest provides us with a large amount of information about the composition and characteristics of ancient plant populations and climatic conditions. Thus, the historical monument is a natural witness to the geological history of the Aegean Sea basin for at least 20 million years.
