The Lantern Play originated in Qing Dynasty with a history of more than 200
years. The play is a mixture of diversified local art forms across China.
Therefore it is well received in the whole country.
Historically, Lantern play was performed from the 3rd day after the Chinese
Lunar New Year to the 21st day. The performers must go to local monastery to
worship the Buddha for good luck on everything they do in the whole year. The
play used to be more religious. Yet as time gose by, it has been increasingly
entertaining with diversified lines and melodies added into the play. The period
of performance has also been extended to the spring. At present, Lantern Play
has become a full-fledged industry of business.
Lantern Play has helped to enrich the lives of local residents and
exemplifies how local people conserves local traditional art.
