Granite Weathering Pits

These varying sized hollows arranged along the quartz veins on the granite body, and which look like strings of beads, are called granite caverns. They were formed after the vein quartz peeled off and was then enlarged by runoff erosion and frost wedging.

Did you know?

Quartz is a one of the most common minerals in the Earth’s crust and its major component is silicon dioxide. It is hard, colorless, transparent and translucent, or opaque when containing impurities. After being heated or pressurized, quartz turns into liquid and fills in the crevices in the rock, distributing in a vein-like or wall-like fashion. Most beach sand is made of quartz.
